Assistant Chief Underwriter (Individual Life Insurance)
The Assistant Chief Underwriter will work closely with and assist the Chief Underwriter with overall Life Underwriting strategy, risk selection, research and development, ongoing governance and performance of all life underwriting practices and procedures. You will also help to oversee the Accelerated Underwriting Program and ensure underwriting decisions are in line with company policies and compliant with all governmental regulations.
As the Assistant Chief Underwriter, you will be involved with underwriting training and continuing education for the underwriting team. The Asst Chief will also work with the Chief to establish new policies, guidelines and procedures. The Asst Chief will collaborate closely with internal contacts and Sr Leaders in Operations, Actuarial, Legal, IT, Compliance and Sales/Distribution. You will work closely with external contacts such as the field sales force, policy holders, insureds, labs and other related vendors, medical, reinsurance and data providers.
Responsibilities include:
– Ensure underwriting results are consistent with pricing expectations. Enforce risk classification principals. Approve applications above authority granted to underwriting staff
– Assist with development and implementation of the overall Underwriting Strategy. Stay up to date on industry trends in underwriting, attend industry meetings, develop continuing education, consult with the Medical Director
– Leverage innovation, technology, automation, data, and analytics to optimize the underwriting process to improve risk selection, profitability, underwriting efficiency and improve customer service
– Develop and update underwriting guidelines including the applications, forms, sales, and pricing tools
– Assist with training and development of the underwriting staff, assist with discipline/performance reviews, salary adjustments and help with budget
– Continuous improvement of the underwriting processes. Finding ways to reduce cost, improve turnaround times and generally increasing underwriting efficiency and risk selection processes
– Work closely with Legal and Compliance to comply with all state and federal laws and regulations dealing with risk classification, privacy, confidentiality, and suitability requirements
– Develop and strengthen field relationships by improving the effectiveness of agent field underwriting through training of agents and Home Office staff.
Requirements include:
– 12 to 15+ years Life Underwriting experience required
– Management/team lead experience is a plus
– Experience with large face amount (5-10MM)
– Experience with training is a plus
– Experience with rules engines, automation, UW data is a plus
– Experience working with areas like Actuarial, Medical, IT, Ops a plus
– Experience developing policy, guidelines, procedures, manuals a plus
– Experience working closely with the field (Sales) is a plus
– Experience analyzing metrics and industry trends to develop effective underwriting practices required.
– Strong analytical, problem solving and organizational skills required
– Experience with workflow management and workforce planning expected
– Budget control and expense management experience is desired
– Occasional travel required
