Should You Go Into Life Insurance Sales?

Advice From An Insurance Staffing Agency

The insurance industry is a big business and it is powered by life insurance sales. With the average American spending nearly $280,000 just on health care in their lifetime, there’s every reason to consider life insurance. You may have considered working as a life insurance agent before but didn’t know where to start. Unfortunately, there’s not a quick online course that you can follow to get your license (which we’ll go into more detail about later). But if your heart is set on working in this field—and it should be—you’ll need to find the right staffing agency. Find out how Questpro can help you make this happen.

What does a life insurance agent do?

A life insurance agent is like a superhero. They swoop in and save the day. But, unlike other superheroes, they don’t wear a cape or have any superpowers. Instead, they rely on their excellent training and vast knowledge to help families protect themselves from life’s uncertainties.

So, how does a life insurance agent do this?

They help people plan for their future through life insurance sales. These policies allow individuals to pay for the cost of their funeral expenses, mortgages, or debts and even provide financial security for their loved ones after they pass away.
Life insurance agents are also responsible for helping clients choose the right type of policy based on their needs and budget—which can be tricky since there are so many different types available! For example: if someone wants something that will cover them while they’re still alive, then whole life insurance might work best because it has a cash value that builds up over time; but if someone is only interested in covering costs related to their death (like funeral expenses), then term life insurance would probably be more appropriate since it doesn’t build up value as permanent insurance does—it just pays out when someone dies within a specific period at some point during that term (usually 20 years).
Life insurance agents are the unsung heroes of our society. While dealing with their stress and worries, they spend their days helping people make sure that their loved ones will be cared for if something horrible happens.
It’s not an easy job. It requires a great deal of empathy and patience. But it also requires a lot of humanity and understanding.
Life insurance agents deal with death daily. They must meet grieving people who are terrified of what the future holds for them and their families, who are upset about losing someone they love.
It doesn’t sound easy to do, but life insurance agents do it every day. They help people prepare for the worst by ensuring that their families will be taken care of financially if something happens to them.

Do you really need a degree to engage in life insurance sales?

The short answer is: no. The longer answer is, well, it depends on if you want your state licensing agency to be happy with you or not. You might be surprised to learn that the educational requirements for life insurance agents are not as stringent as you might expect, given the nature of the task: entrusting them with the wellbeing of you and your loved ones.
Because the truth is, while you can get a job as a life insurance agent without any formal education or training, most companies won’t hire someone like that for long. They want to make sure that the people who work for them know what they’re doing, which means having those licenses and certifications.
So, if you want to make your career in life insurance sales, getting some formal education and training will be necessary. What kind of education/training? That depends on what state you’ll be working in.

How much can I make as a life insurance agent?

The sky’s the limit!
Okay, not really—but it’s certainly not a fixed salary either. As a life insurance agent, you can make as much money as you want. All you need is to be highly motivated and excellent at persuading people to buy from you. Most life insurance agents are paid based on commission alone, so the more policies you sell, the more money you’ll make.

You can expect to make around $50,000 a year to start. From there, anything could happen. Some life insurance agents go on to make millions of dollars every year. Others never leave their first 50K. It depends on how well you do your job—nothing more, nothing less.
And if you’ve been in the business for 10+ years, expect a salary of around $80–$100,000 per year.
Still, there’s no denying the potential of this career path. The top 10% of life insurance agents earn over $111,000 per year!
